Schedule subject to change. Holiday updates posted at least 48 hours in advance on Facebook and Instagram.
We close for major holidays.
The academy closes on major federal holidays including Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Reduced schedules apply during holiday weeks, typically running morning classes only. We post all holiday schedule changes to our Facebook and Instagram pages at least 48 hours in advance. Members also receive an email notification. Call (559) 477-2053 if you are unsure whether we are open on a specific day.
Active members can drop into any eligible class.
Current members may attend any class within their enrolled program without advance registration, subject to capacity. For specialty classes and events with limited spots, advance sign-up is required and noted on the event listing. Prospective students on the trial period may attend any class that matches their program and age band. Visitors who are not yet enrolled are welcome to watch any class from the observation area without registration.
Missed classes can be made up within the same week.
If a student misses a scheduled class, they may attend any equivalent class offered that same week as a makeup without additional charge. Makeup classes do not roll over to the following week. Students who need to miss an extended period due to illness, travel, or injury should contact the front desk to discuss a hold or credit option. We work with families on a case-by-case basis and do not penalize students for circumstances outside their control.
Found Your Time? Lock It In.
You have seen when classes run. Pick a start date on the calendar and we will hold your spot. Your $59 one-week trial covers a full week in any program, free Guido's t-shirt included. No experience required.
What to Know for Your First Class.
First-time nerves are normal and expected. This list covers everything so your first visit is straightforward from the moment you walk in.
RESERVE MY SPOT- 01
Arrive 10 minutes early
Early arrival lets us sign you in, show you around, and introduce you to the instructor before class starts. Rushing in at the last minute means missing context that makes the first class easier to follow.
- 02
Wear athletic clothing
Shorts or sweatpants and a t-shirt work for the first class. Your trial uniform is waiting for you when you arrive. No need to buy or prepare anything before your first visit.
- 03
Bring a water bottle
Classes run 45 to 60 minutes. Staying hydrated throughout is important, especially in your first few sessions before your conditioning improves.
- 04
Leave the gear shopping for later
No special equipment is needed for the trial class. When you decide to enroll, we will give you a specific list and tell you where to get it without overpaying.
- 05
Parents: the viewing area is ready for you
Dedicated seating is available in the parent observation area. Watching the class in full is encouraged for first visits. We want you to see exactly what your child is experiencing from the first day.
- 06
No experience is needed
Every student starts somewhere. Instructors will meet you at your current level and give you corrections and encouragement throughout. Showing up is the only prerequisite for the first class.
- 07
Remove shoes at the mat edge
All training happens barefoot on the mat. Shoes are removed at the edge before stepping on. This is a standard protocol and will be pointed out when you arrive if you miss the signage.
- 08
Ask questions after class
After the class ends, the instructor will check in with new students. That is the right time to ask about the curriculum, pacing, and what to expect in the weeks ahead. No question is too basic.
What a Typical Class Looks Like at Our Clovis Dojo.
- 1
Line Up and Bow In
Students line up in order of rank at the start of every class and bow to open the session. This is a two-second routine that signals the transition from outside life to focused training. Students who are chronically late miss this, which is why arriving early matters.
- 2
Warm-Up
Every class opens with a structured warm-up that includes movement drills, mobility work, and light cardiovascular activity appropriate for the age group and program. For kids, this often includes movement games. For adult programs, it is more technique-focused. The warm-up runs 8 to 12 minutes.
- 3
Technique Instruction
The instructor introduces one to three related techniques for the day. Each technique is demonstrated in full, broken down step by step, and demonstrated again before students attempt it. For new students, this is the slowest and most detailed part of the class. Instructors welcome questions here.
- 4
Drilling with a Partner
Students pair up and drill the technique repeatedly with a partner. Repetitions build muscle memory. The instructor circulates and provides individual corrections. New students are paired intentionally with experienced partners who can guide them through the movement with patience.
- 5
Controlled Application
Advanced and intermediate students apply their technique in a controlled live setting, whether that is light sparring, positional rolling, or situational drilling. New students observe or participate at a reduced resistance level under close instructor supervision. This section only applies when the student is ready.
- 6
Cool-Down and Debrief
The final five minutes of every class are spent cooling down, stretching, and debriefing. The instructor highlights what the class worked on, acknowledges students who demonstrated the technique well, and previews what is coming next. This is where the lesson sticks.
- 7
Bow Out
Students bow out in the same formation they opened in. For new students, the instructor will check in briefly after class to answer questions and give early feedback. Parents of younger students are invited to speak with the instructor at this point as well.
Common Questions About Classes and Events.
How often should a Clovis martial arts student come per week?
Two to three classes per week is the standard for meaningful progress. One class per week keeps a student in the routine but tends to slow advancement significantly because the time between sessions allows too much technique to fade. Three classes per week is ideal for students who are serious about advancement, want to compete, or are working toward a specific belt milestone. Attendance at that frequency also builds the kind of discipline and commitment that transfers to everything outside the gym. Students who can only make one class per week are still welcome and will still improve, but they should set expectations accordingly and communicate with the instructor about realistic advancement timelines.
Can I drop in or do I need to register?
Active members can drop into any eligible class without advance registration, subject to available space. For specialty events and workshops where capacity is limited, advance sign-up is required and will be noted clearly on the event listing. Prospective students in their trial period follow the same drop-in rules as active members within their enrolled program. First-time visitors who have not yet started a trial are always welcome to watch any class from the observation area without registration. To actually train, booking a trial spot first ensures you are in the right class at the right time.
What if I miss a class?
Missed classes can be made up by attending any equivalent class offered that same week. A student who misses their Monday Juniors MMA class can make it up at the Wednesday or Friday session in the same age group. Makeup classes do not carry over to the following week. For students missing an extended period due to illness, injury, or travel, we offer the option to pause or credit the membership. Contact the front desk directly to arrange this. We do not run a strict no-makeup policy because life happens, but the makeup window exists specifically to keep students consistent rather than allowing them to skip without consequence.
How do you handle holidays?
The academy closes on major federal holidays including Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. During holiday weeks such as the week of Thanksgiving or the week between Christmas and New Year's, we typically run a reduced schedule with morning classes only. All changes are posted to our Facebook and Instagram pages at least 48 hours before they take effect, and active members receive an email notification. Holiday schedules are also posted at the front desk at the start of each month. When in doubt, call (559) 477-2053 or check social media before driving in on a day you are uncertain about.
When are belt testings?
Belt testings are held approximately every three to four months and are announced at least two weeks in advance. Students are nominated by their instructor when they have demonstrated the technical competency, attitude, and consistency required for the next rank. Testing is not on a fixed calendar, it is based on individual readiness, so two students who started the same day might test at different times. When a testing is scheduled, it is listed on the events page and communicated to nominated students and their families directly. Family members are encouraged to attend testings since they function as both a performance and a celebration.
How do I sign up for events?
Each event listing on this page includes an RSVP or registration link. Clicking it takes you to a short form where you enter the student's name, age, and program. For paid events like summer camp, payment is collected at the time of registration. For free events and workshops, the RSVP helps us manage capacity and prepare appropriately for the number of attendees. You can also register in person at the front desk or by calling (559) 477-2053. We confirm all registrations by email and send a reminder 48 hours before the event.
Are events open to family members?
Most events are open to family members as observers or participants depending on the event type. Belt testings actively welcome and encourage family attendance and we hold them at times that work for a typical family schedule. In-house tournaments include a family viewing area. Parent workshops are specifically for family members rather than students. Summer camp is a drop-off program so parents are not present on the mat, but are invited to the final session for a brief showcase. Event listings specify family attendance rules clearly so there is no ambiguity before you arrive.
Can I watch a class before signing up?
Yes, and we actively encourage it. Walk in during any business hour, tell the person at the front desk you would like to observe a class, and they will show you to the viewing area and let you know when the next relevant class begins. No appointment needed. No pressure to sign up during the visit. Watching a real class in progress is the most accurate way to evaluate whether the instruction quality and culture match what you are looking for. We prefer that families observe before committing rather than joining and discovering a mismatch later.
