Why BJJ
Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Is Different From Every Other Martial Art
BJJ is a problem-solving sport. Every position is a puzzle. Every training partner is a different problem set. You can train it for years and still find something new every session.
That is why people who start BJJ rarely stop. It is not just fitness. It is a skill - one that compounds over time, rewards patience and consistency, and produces a kind of confidence that is hard to get anywhere else.
At Guido's, the adult BJJ program is run by nationally certified instructors who take the art seriously. You will learn real technique, drill with real partners, and train in an environment that pushes you without burning you out.
What Training Produces
What Consistent BJJ Training Produces
Technical Grappling Skill
Takedowns, sweeps, submissions, positional control - the fundamentals of BJJ taught correctly and built on over time. You will develop skills that are genuinely effective.
Athletic Conditioning
Rolling is one of the most demanding forms of exercise available. Strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination all develop through training. It does not feel like a workout because it isn't - it is competition.
Composure Under Pressure
BJJ puts you in uncomfortable positions - literally. Learning to stay calm, think clearly, and execute under physical and psychological pressure builds a mental toughness that transfers everywhere.
A Training Community That Takes It Seriously
The culture at a serious BJJ gym is different from a general fitness environment. You will train with people who are invested, competitive, and committed to improving. That culture is contagious.
The Program
How the Adult BJJ Program at Guido's Is Structured
Classes cover fundamental technique instruction, partner drilling, and positional or live training depending on experience level. Beginners start with the foundational curriculum and progress at a pace that builds real skill without overwhelming.
Shihan and certified instructors lead every session. Class sizes are managed to ensure instruction quality and adequate mat time. If you are coming from another school or have prior grappling experience, we will meet you at your level.

Common Questions
Common Questions From People Considering BJJ
I have no grappling experience. Can I still start?
Yes. Most adult BJJ students at Guido's started as complete beginners. The foundational curriculum is designed for people with no prior experience. You will not be thrown into advanced training before you are ready.
BJJ seems intense. Am I going to get hurt?
Controlled drilling and positional training make up the majority of classes. Live rolling intensity is self-regulated - you train at the pace that is right for your body and experience level. Injuries happen in any contact sport, but proper training and supervision minimize risk significantly.
How long does it take to get good?
Longer than you want, and faster than you expect. Most people feel genuinely competent within 6-12 months of consistent training. The more important question is whether you will show up consistently - which is easy when you actually enjoy training.
I am older. Is BJJ still practical for me?
Many of the techniques in BJJ were specifically designed to work for smaller, older, or less athletic practitioners. Adults who start later often excel because they rely on technique rather than trying to muscle through everything.
